Several main Alicante city roads, including the main Avenida de Dénia accessing the city centre from the north (pictured) were flooded yesterday in the worst downpours since the tragic deluges of 1997 when five people died.
Yesterday, the total rainfall was of 150 litres per square metre in Alicante city and classes were called off today at three schools plus all those in San Vicente, Campello and San Juan university campus.
Flooding was also reported in other areas of the Costa Blanca and floodgate were opened at Amadorio and Guadalest reservoirs – full to the brim
