WITH Calpe residents facing services cuts and significant tax increases due to the falling number of people on the local register (Padrón), mayor César Sánchez has this week made a desperate call for everyone – especially expats – to sign on.
As reported last week in Costa Blanca News, the dramatic fall in the number of registered residents to below 20,000 could see IBI property tax may have to be increased by up to 10% from July this year – because EU and Government aid is only granted to towns with more than 20,000 inhabitants. The local council will be forced to increase taxes to offset any lack of funding – in excess of €2million.
