A woman in her 30s was arrested and jailed at the weekend on suspicion of having attempted to take the life of her baby while he was being treated in Málaga’s Hospital Materno. On June 15, she alerted staff that her nine-month-old boy had suffered cardio respiratory failure but he was successfully resuscitated by medical staff.
Following the incident, an investigation opened into why the system monitoring the infant’s vital signs had failed to sound an alert and an engineer from the manufacturer was called in to repair it. Suspicions were aroused when it was reported that the machine was working perfectly, but that it had been switched off for about 90 seconds immediately before the mother raised the alarm herself, during which time she had been alone with her baby.
