CRITICISM of the government over its use of the new, unopened Archidona prison as an immigrant holding centre intensified at the weekend after a 36-year-old Algerian man was found hanged to death in his individual cell at the facility last Friday, December 29.
Immigrant rights groups, political parties and other groups had been calling for a halt to the use of the prison to hold immigrants after around 500 Algerians who had arrived in Spain by boat were sent there in November due to a lack of sufficient space at existing immigrant holding centres.
