A campaign recently launched by a Marbella group to get one of the Costa del Sol’s classic beach delicacies added to Unesco’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list is gaining support.

Last month the Marbella Activa association announced its push to get the Costa’s famous ‘espetos de sardinas’, or sardines on a spit, granted the heritage status. Marbella town hall quickly signed on to the campaign, followed by at least two of the province’s Michelin-starred chefs, Diego del Río and Marcos Granda.

The initiative now appears set to get an institutional boost at the province-wide level, with the ruling Partido Popular at the Diputación de Málaga provincial government saying last week it is to bring a motion calling for the Diputación to officially sign on to the campaign.
