The curtain came down on Jávea’s David Ferrer’s tennis career after defeat (6-4, 6-1) by reigning champion Alexander Zverev at the Madrid Open on Wednesday.
The 37-year-old, a former world number three who won 27 career titles and reached the French Open final in 2013, wanted to retire after his home tournament.
Tributes to his carrer are already in the pipeline in Jávea.
