EMERGENCY services are urging visitors and residents to stop clambering down Jávea’s cliffs via the old fishermen’s rope ladders – practically every week, fire brigade helicopters have to be called out to rescue foolhardy hikers.
Post-war fishermen used to use these precarious, rocky and near-vertical paths to catch their dinner, since their land was not fertile enough to grow food – and they say this daily adventure seems to have skipped a generation and revived itself.
