TRAGEDY struck in Benalmádena on Tuesday, April 12, as dozens of animals were killed after a fire broke out in an Arroyo de la Miel pet shop.
The alarm was raised at around 7.30am by officers at the National Police station on Calle Las Flores, who called the fire brigade after noticing smoke coming from Pet Shop Monini, located on the same street.
Unfortunately, when the fire crew entered the building they found a large number of animals had already perished in the blaze, a town hall spokesperson told CDSN. An exact figure is yet to be confirmed, and a report from the post-fire inspection will determine the final number. Amongst the dead animals were dogs, guinea pigs, fish and birds, although firefighters were able to rescue a few tortoises and some hamsters.
