THIS year’s Maratón Vías Verdes Ojos Negros in Castellón province will go down in history as the most tragic edition yet.
Two runners passed away during the race through the Alto Palancia district at the weekend.
Francisco Amat, aged 57 and from Alicante, reportedly collapsed halfway through the race at its pass through Caudiel and was rushed to Sagunto hospital after receiving emergency medical attention on site.
He was pronounced dead on arrival, with the official cause of death set as ‘multiple heart-attack’.
Then, just hours after completing the course, a second participant – identified as 45-year-old Juan Antonio Barros Núñez, from Barcelona – lost his life.
