Thousands gathered in Madrid on Sunday to call for better protection for the endangered Iberian wolf. They say the species is almost extinct in the south because farmers shoot them as a threat to livestock. Ecology groups say the wolf is thriving in Portugal where it is protected but the Spanish government has done little, despite EU directives demanding the population be maintained.
