A 46-year-old local police officer in La Línea de la Concepción was killed in the line of duty last week when he was accidentally hit by a police car while attempting to arrest an alleged tobacco smuggler following a chase near the Gibraltar border. After his death last Wednesday the town hall declared three days of official mourning, and on Thursday some 3,000 people turned out for a demonstration in the town’s Plaza de la Iglesia.
