The Guardia Civil has detained 59 people in a world-wide crackdown on the trafficking of illegal species. In Spain alone, officers made almost 6,000 inspections and seized animals including cats, primates and exotic birds, as well as other items such as ivory pieces and a taxidermied lion. Offenders face up to five years in prison and a fine equal to 3.5 times the commercial value of the species being trafficked.
