Mains gas is set to rise in price by 2% this month. The 1.7 million homes which enjoyed state-controlled piped gas supplies will pay the same standing charge, frozen now for four years, but the cost of the fuel will increase thanks to a rise of 5.5% in raw materials, in line with crude oil. Private sector distributors are free to set their own charges.
