THE FIRST trial in one of Spain’s largest corruption cases, known as Gürtel, has begun at the High Court in Madrid, implicating the Partido Popular (PP) in extensive allegations of bribery for municipal, regional and ministerial public contracts and illegal financing of the party and its election campaigns.
