THE National Police have broken up a gang that allegedly exploited illegal immigrants in Granada. Eleven people have been detained in the city in an operation which began almost a year ago.
The detained group is suspected of bringing Nigerian nationals into Spain illegally, some of them minors, before forcing them to hand over their personal documents until they paid off a huge debt they were told they owed the gang. The victims were intimated with threats against their families, and voodoo rituals were employed to frighten them further, said officials.
Women were forced to work as prostitutes, either on the streets or in nightclubs, while men were ordered to beg for money on Granada’s streets, being told where to stand, for how long, and how much cash they were expected to collect.
