A Russian family of four have become the newest residents of Cartajima, a small village in the Valle del Genal, after being selected by the local council from more than 3,200 applicants to the town hall’s offer of reduced-rate rent and temporary employment.
The council announced in April that the incentives would be offered to families willing to pack their bags and move to the village 111km from Málaga, in order for the local school to meet the minimum number of students required by the Junta de Andalucía to avoid closure. Ekaterina Koziyakova, her husband Anton Svitlichnyy and their two daughters aged five and three, applied for the move after hearing about it through social media.
