A 47-year-old Málaga man was ordered to be held in custody on Sunday after being accused of attempting to abduct a three-year-old boy during the city’s Carnival procession on Saturday evening. Police said the suspect had been attending the festivities in fancy dress, including a teeshirt displaying an FBI logo, and carrying toy handcuffs.
The drama began to unfold at about 8.30pm when the child and his mother were watching the parade in Plaza de la Constitución. When his mother realised that her son was no longer by her side, she began to shout and call his name, prompting family members and friends to start searching in the tightly-packed crowd.
