Minister for science Diana Morant highlighted the government’s commitment to restoring the Mar Menor during a visit to San Pedro del Pinatar.
She met with researchers at the Spanish oceanography institute (IEO), and emphasised the work of the scientific community, ‘which is dedicated to monitoring the lagoon and seeking solutions to this environmental emergency’ that has been killing off its flora and fauna. The minister emphasised that the lagoon’s problems are caused by man-made inflows of nutrients and heavy metals, and can only be reverted by human action.
She assured that multi-disciplinary and institutional collaboration is needed to effectively restore the Mar Menor, and called on Murcia regional government to fulfil its duties, particularly inspecting and fining unauthorised farming practices around the Mar Menor.
