Two high-street supermarket chains in Belgium have removed El Pozo cured meat products from their shelves following explosive claims about animal mistreatment at a Murcia pig farm.
Video footage taken covertly at the supplier farm in Alhama de Murcia by animal rights activists and broadcast last week on the ‘Salvados’ prime time Spanish TV programme showed pigs with severe deformities, broken bones and infected sores, as well as dead animals lying in pens or rotting away in bins.
As a result of the accusations directed at the Murcia-based firm by pressure group Animal Equality, the Delhaize and Colruyt supermarket chains have removed a total of nine El Pozo branded products from some 340 Belgian stores.
