Car rental problems

Recently we booked a car hire at Alicante airport arriving around midnight. The computer booking put 00.00 hours. The date we flew.
On arrival, just before midnight on the same date, car hire company said, contract is cancelled and we need new contract. Insisting we didn’t pick up the car on time on booking document. Car was rented for week.
It was not stated when we booked how accurate you have to be estimating your arrival. It shouldn’t make a difference if I pick the car up few hours later as plane can be delayed. It sound it like a scam. Any reason to cancel booking and issue new contract for far much more money, €190+€78 instead of £35 paid online in England.
That night there were lots of angry stranded cheated people. It spoiled our long deserved Spanish break.
