Invasive algae colonising Alicante seabeds

An invasive species of brown macroalgae, native to the north-western Pacific, has been detected off the coast of Alicante province.

Researchers at Alicante university warned that it poses a threat to biodiversity, fishing and beach tourism.

The algae was observed off the Alicante coast for the first time and in large quantities in early March this year in samples collected by UA marine zoology students and teachers during practical classes.
