A poster for a satirical musical to be staged in Almería next week has offended devout Catholics after it featured the city’s patron saint, the Virgen del Mar, riding into town dressed as a Western cowgirl.
The advert for ‘Mongolia 2.0’ – a musical produced by satirical magazine Mongolia poking fun at politicians and the state of the world – shows a statue of the virgin on horseback dressed in jeans and sporting a cowboy hat and whip.
The image sparked an outcry from the Virgen del Mar Catholic brotherhood which threatened to “take whatever legal action necessary” against the event promoters.
