Towns along the west of the province were hit by at least three tornadoes on Saturday (January 6), causing an estimated €40 million worth of damage to greenhouses, according to reports.
Up to 200 hectares of greenhouses were destroyed or heavily damaged by one tornado as it swept through El Ejido, reportedly travelling for some 15 kilometres before breaking up over nearby mountains.
Video footage of the destructive ‘twister’ shows it scything its way past greenhouses and sending plastic and crops high into the air.
