A row has broken out over the planned re-location of one of Almería city’s best known monuments.
The memorial statue known as ‘El Pingurucho’ that stands in the middle of the Plaza Vieja is due to be moved to the Plaza de las Velas on Federico García Lorca as part of the renovation of the square and its historic council building.
However, members of the opposition Socialist PSOE and left wing Izquierda Unida parties are against the move, saying they were never consulted on it.
The monument stands as a memorial to 24 liberals known as ‘Los Coloraos’ who were executed in the city in 1824 after coming to Almería from Gibraltar to fight against the totalitarian rule of Fernando VII.
