Plans to extend Mojacar’s new promenade through a row of the town’s most iconic beach bars have been suspended after it was revealed the council failed to comply with legal deadlines.
But while protesters celebrate at the spanner in the works, the council says the project will “go forward”, blaming the delay on “an attempt at obstruction”.
Owners of Maui beach bar, one of the affected chiringuitos, appealed to the ministry of the environment to stop the project based on alleged failure by the council to comply with legal time limits for publication of the plans and their final approval by the ministry.
The appeal was allowed and the ministry has notified Mojacar council of the “expiry of the project”, which the council says will result in “a few months delay to the start of work”.
