Mojacar council’s decision to charge an annual tax to guarantee access to private garages from next year has sparked accusations from the socialist opposition party that the ruling Partido Popular administration is “bleeding residents dry” to plug a budget shortfall.
The controversy revolves around a never before implemented 2007 by-law regulating the issuing of ‘vados’ (private driveways), which is a rate paid to the council in exchange for the right to establish a guaranteed entrance to off-road parking via a public pavement.
The tax takes effect from January 1, 2017 but notifications have now been sent.
