Nine women in Turre recently completed a pioneering animal assisted therapy course offered by the council as part of activities held to celebrate international day against domestic violence last month.
The course, led by Turre-based therapist Susana Salamanca, uses horses to aid the therapeutic process, in an innovative approach developed by Ms Salamanca over the last seven years.
Her engagement by the council to help local women is seen by Ms Salamanca as an indication of “changing attitudes” of government institutions towards a more “progressive approach” in addressing community needs.
