A senator for the conservative Partido Popular party in Almería has sparked controversy after appearing on a video saying only idiots should work.
Eugenio Gonzálvez, who was also mayor of Gádor for 29 years before stepping down last year, appears with a small group of friends, saying: “You should do like me: retire and still be the boss, like I’m the boss, but do it from the shadows – let the idiots work.”
The comments were reportedly made at a recent birthday party of a friend of Gonzálvez’s. The video later went viral after hundreds of people shared the brief footage on Whatsapp, provoking an angry response from opposition parties, who have demanded his resignation.
