The director of Almería’s most emblematic monument, the Alcazaba fortress, will step down in September following last month’s drilling scandal, which damaged part of an 11th century wall.
Director Maria Luisa García was heavily criticised in June for failing to prevent workers from drilling 20 holes into the Arab citadel’s ‘Patio de Armas’ courtyard to support a stage for a theatre show.
Sra García’s tenure as director was marked by a number of high-profile mishaps, including two separate incidents involving the partial collapse of the citadel’s defensive walls.
