It turns out that eating one’s words is not an entirely unpleasurable experience. I thought England’s World Cup campaign would end in disaster not long after it started but fourth place is not to be sniffed at. Although many fans are celebrating this excellent achievement we shouldn’t get carried away. The team played seven matches and the results (not including penalties) were three wins, a draw and three defeats. That’s not a great win/loss record. But the side is young and talented and we have a brilliant manager so maybe just maybe football will be coming home in the not too distant future. However, I’m not yet ready to bet the farm on it.
