Calpe will compete with up to 40 towns in the Valencian region to win the Green Flag for sustainability in the hospitality industry, as the most committed municipality in glass recycling this summer. It will try to snatch this award from l’Alfà s del Pi and Finestrat who won it in the last campaign.
This is the 5th edition of the #MovimientoBanderasVerdes, an initiative launched by Ecovidrio, the non-profit organisation in charge of managing the recycling of glass packaging waste in Spain. The campaign aims to reward the commitment of municipalities and the hotel and catering industry to the circular economy and glass recycling during the summer season.
This summer, more than 161 establishments in Calpe will participate in the campaign launched by Ecovidrio due to the high consumption rates of glass containers in the hospitality industry in coastal areas. In summer, a third of the glass containers that are put into circulation are consumed and nearly 50% of the single-use glass packaging waste that is put on the market is generated by the hospitality sector, so their involvement is key to generate a real transition towards a more circular and decarbonised model.
In this way, the municipality with the highest score based on the following criteria will be awarded the Green Flag:
– the percentage of participation of catering establishments
– the number of kilos of glass packaging waste recycled
– the diffusion of the campaign
