The ITV (MOT) motor vehicle inspection service in the Valencia region starts the first phase of reverting to public control this week, after being privatised for the last 25 years.
The contract with the concessionary companies, which are in conflict with the regional government, ends today (Friday, February 24), while for the others it will be on March 3, following the extension granted to them for having to close during the state of emergency for Covid-19.
The reversion to public control was originally scheduled to take place on January 1 but had to be put back by two months.
The service was originally privatised in 1997 by the Partido Popular (PP) regional government of Eduardo Zaplana, over which the ex-minister and ex-regional president is still awaiting trial for allegedly charging commissions for concessions for ITV stations and wind farms in the Valencia region.
Then, in 2004, the PP regional councillor Rafael Blasco – since convicted of diverting international aid funds – added a noise test to the inspection, which increased the price but
has been scrapped as of January 1 this year.
