LAND to set up a European centre for research into ice cream has been ceded by the regional government to Jijona town hall.
The municipality is long-renowned for its turrón (nougat) and ice cream, with both industries closely linked to its founding and evolution.
According to the town hall, back in the 15th century caves in the Sierra de La Carrasqueta were converted to store snow for making ice cream, but the local sector did not become industrialised until 1914.
The land, measuring 2,174 square metres in the town’s L’Espartal III industrial estate, is owned by the regional institute for business competitiveness (IVACE) and will be ceded in turn by the town hall to the Jijona-based national association of artisanal ice-cream and horchata (tiger nut milk drink) makers and retailers (ANHCEA).
