Local councils look set to eradicate one of Almería’s most iconic plants despite a recent u-turn by the Junta de Andalucía.

An original plan by the regional government to remove the invasive plant species outside the provincial capital was reduced in scope following a wave of bad publicity and angry protests.

The plant has become an iconic feature on the provincial landscape, but it has been classified as an invasive species by the European Union, despite claims by environmentalists that wind erosion increases as razed areas are left without plant cover.
