I know – you think about Cádiz, and sherry automatically arrives in your brain’s inbox. The port from which Columbus left to discover the New World is found on a narrow strip of land surrounded by the sea. It’s the oldest continually inhabited city in Spain, and one of the most ancient in Europe.
Cádiz was home to the Spanish Navy (we are talking Armada here) and was therefore a very prosperous city – capital of the Province of Cádiz and is still a leading metropolis in the Comunidad de Andalucía. Cádiz was an ideal port from which to ship ‘Sack’ (Sherry) to Shakespeare’s Falstaff in England, because of its proximity to what we now know as the Sherry Triangle, which encompasses Jerez de la Frontera, Sanlúcar de Barrameda and El Puerto de Santa Maria.
