A state owned golf school in El Toyo which cost €1.6 million to build still has no licence and no opening date despite having been completed last October, reports say.
Golf is an integral part of the tourism strategy for the province, but the authorities continue to advertise closed golf courses to unsuspecting tourists.
The complex is sited on the El Toyo municipal golf course outside Almería city and was announced by the Junta de Andalucía in 2013. It was to be the third public golf school in the region, and a cornerstone of the Junta’s plan to lure more golfing tourists to the region.
But Almería council criticised the complex as unnecessary as there is already a municipal golf school there, and say the money should have been spent on schools. When the school was announced, Almería had 10 golf courses for fewer than 10,000 federated golf players.
