A PACK of ex-Spanish hunting dogs, many of them wearing coats in the Spanish flag colours of red and yellow, marched with their new owners to the Spanish Embassy and 10 Downing Street in London on Sunday, the International Day of the Podenco, to bring attention to the mass abandonment and ongoing cruelty to these working dogs in Spain.
Families who have adopted abandoned Spanish hunting dogs in the UK gathered in Belgrave Square on an unusually sunny, bright morning and marched to the Spanish Embassy at 39 Chesham Place before proceeding on to 10 Downing Street. At both addresses the marchers delivered letters of protest about the cruel treatment of podencos, galgos (greyhounds), pointers, setters, bodegueros and other breeds that are abused and discarded by hunters every year in Spain. A photocard petition of other Spanish dogs now living happily as pets in the UK was also handed in.
