A TOTAL of €13,900 of taxpayers’ money is being spent each day on paying interest on the loan taken out to pay for Corvera airport.
Construction of the international airport at the inland site started in 2008 – despite the fact that Murcia-San Javier airport lies around 30km away.
However, two years later, the company building the infrastructure, Aeromur, ran out of cash and the regional government had to guarantee a €180 million loan with the banks to complete it.
Since then, a host of problems have meant the airport has never been able to open.
This led regional deputy for the Podemos party, Óscar Urralburu, to comment “that the only thing that has flown out of Corvera has been the cash wasted on the loan”.
Regional councillor for infrastructure Francisco Bernabé admitted that the interest had been running at €22,000 a day since December 2013, when the regional government took over Aeromur’s loan.
