A ‘NEW’ type of ecological sweetener is gaining ground in allotments around Valencia province.
Stevia is a plant originating from Paraguay and is said to be between 150 and 300 times sweeter than refined sugar.
It also has a negligible effect on blood glucose levels, therefore is suitable for diabetics and other consumers who do not tolerate sugar.
Stevia has zero calories, offers benefits for obese consumers and can help fight tooth decay.
Plans currently on the table are to incorporate it into the regional food industry in products such as ‘horchata’, ‘turrón’, icecream and fruit juices.
